The phone rang. "Who have we got, Nancy?" I yelled to my secretary. "Unknown female, could be a client," came the reply through the thin wall. "Murphy Investigations," I answered, "Nick Murphy speaking." Unknown female said, "Mr. Murphy, you were recommended by an acquaintance of mine. I'll get straight to the point. I think someone is trying to frame my cousin for murder and I'd like to hire you to help clear her." The word 'murder' shifted things out of the everyday boredom of P.I. work, and made me instantly more alert. "And your cousin is . .?" "Madeline Patterson."

OK, that gave me something to work with. I'd seen the case in the papers. The victim was Dennis Patterson, president of Patterson-Marley Publishing. Age 42, reasonably good physical shape, keeled over and died. Hospital found bradithan, a slow-acting but deadly poison in the victim's system. Police also found bradithan in the Patterson's house. Suspicion had fallen on the wife (i.e. Madeline Patterson). "And that would make you Linda Wright?" I deduced. "I'm impressed, Mr. Murphy. I think I may have called the right man."

She wanted me to visit her at her home, which was right next door to the Patterson home. I agreed to meet her in a couple hours. Once I was off the phone with her, I talked to a few people. Besides my secretary, Nancy, and myself, I had two other full-time people on the payroll: Arlo Beck and Charity Johanson. Charity was my forensic expert, and Arlo was my computer geek. Oh, officially he was my technical support ...
