I pulled into the parking lot at Jessica's apartment building. Jessica refused to tell me what her news was when she asked me to come over for dinner, but she was obviously very excited. I got out of my car and walked nervously to her door. You'd think after six months together, I'd be more secure about myself, but I'd been burned a couple times in the past. I rang the door bell.

When she opened the door, she smiled at me. She pulled me inside and kissed me hard on the lips. "I'm so glad you're here, Jack," she told me. "Can I take your coat?"

My heart tightened as I handed her my leather jacket. She was being rather formal, and she was wearing a light blue dress, the kind you'd wear to a dinner party, not an intimate dinner. When she led me to the dining room, I didn't know whether to be relieved or even more stressed when I saw the room lit by candles instead of the overhead light. Since the food was already on the table, I pulled out a chair for her. "Thank you, Jack," she said as she sat down.

I pulled out the chair on the other side and sat down myself. While she was breaking up the biscuits on my plate, I blurted out, "I can't stand waiting any more. What's your big news?"

Jessica finished ladling the chicken over the biscuits and put her hands across the table to meet mine. "I have an audition tomorrow night. ...
