It was Thursday noon. Mary and I had sent the morning class home and we were discussing the next day's plans when there was a knock on the door, even though it was open. I recognized the man who walked in.

"Hi, I'm Tom," he said.

"We lucked out, Melissa," Mary said.

Tom looked at her quizzically. I explained, "You filled in for another aide a couple months ago, and you helped us out with some decorations while you were here. Then you filled in for me one afternoon. Mary and I were both so impressed that I asked Sherry to send you if you were available the next time one of us was out. Mary's getting a tooth pulled today, and it looks like I got my wish."

"Thanks!" he said. "I can always use the work."

Tom was wearing a flannel shirt and tan work pants. "I see you came dressed appropriately," I told him.

"Yes. Even normal preschoolers and permanent press don't mix, let alone special-needs kids."

"Well, I guess it's time for me to go," Mary announced.
