The recession had forced me to take a second job to supplement my farm income. Of course, I didn't really go into farming expecting to make a fortune anyway; I just really liked it. Fortunately, my degree in agriculture qualified me to teach General Biology at the local community college. Two classes as an adjunct made up for the money I wasn't getting at the market, and it left me plenty of time to tend to my cattle. I didn't even have to teach the lab sections.

The down side to being an adjunct is that I didn't have an office, so it was rather difficult to have office hours! Instead, I gave students my cell phone number and told them I'd keep it on from noon until nine every weeknight. For Fawn, that wasn't good enough. A month into the semester I gave a quiz on basic genetics, and she left the entire section blank where I asked for the probabilities of various outcomes. The day after I handed the quiz back, I was tightening the hinges on the gates when I heard my ring tone.

"I need help with this," Fawn told me. "I've never been able to work with fractions."

I had to restrain myself from asking why they let her graduate the sixth grade, let alone high school. "This is a science class, not a math class. I deliberately used fractions that anyone can handle."
