I had a couple weeks between jobs, so I took a week to visit some friends in Georgia. I always travel light, so my van had plenty of room for me and my stuff. I left in the morning so I'd beat the rush hour traffic in Memphis. I'd done a web search and found that gas prices got higher after one town midway between Memphis and Nashville, so I pulled off the ramp. As I was turning right, I saw a young woman walking toward the highway on the grass along the ramp. The gas station with the lowest price was in the same building as a diner, so I had supper while I was there. I left knowing that I still had at least a solid hour of daylight.

I'd barely gotten back onto the highway when I saw the same woman walking just off the shoulder. She still had her backpack on. I slowed back down and pulled onto the shoulder just past where she was walking. She came around to my window. "Where ya headed?" I asked her.

"Ford's Grove," she answered. "Georgia."

"You're in luck," I told her. "That's the exit before mine. Would you like a ride?"

"How do I know you won't do kill me or do unspeakable things to me?" she asked.
