I wasn't especially happy when my wife informed me that her brother would be unable to drive himself to the Veteran's Hospital located three hours away. I really didn't like the guy, but I did respect him because like him, I too was an ex-soldier. Pete had been injured while in Afghanistan but his injury was more a matter of stupidity than one caused by actually fighting in combat. I'd served two tours in the same theatre of operations, and had received the Purple Heart for taking a bullet to the right thigh. Pete, on the other hand, had broken his hand because he fell off the back of a truck after a night of drinking. And because his injury had occurred in a combat zone, he received the same award as myself and other men and women who'd been wounded by the enemy's hands. The fact that Pete came home and bragged - and lied -about having to fight his way off the truck galled the hell out of me. But because he was my wife's brother and I wanted to keep the peace, I kept my mouth shut. I believed the truth would surface in the end, anyway, and everyone would learn what truly happened. I had no desire to embarrass the guy, even if I do believe he's an idiot. And now, here I was, being asked by my wife to spend the next day on the road driving him to the far off hospital.
