When I was in my mid-twenties, I answered an ad to play Santa Claus. My name is David Liebowitz. Laugh if you want: yes, I'm a Jew.

I was a photographer, my company did school yearbooks, school pictures that kind of thing. I picked up extra money doing weddings. There aren't all that many weddings in Minnesota in December.

The company that I worked for had a contract to provide a Santa Claus to six different malls in the Twin Cities. It didn't pay much more than minimum wage and between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve, I only had three days off. None were weekends.

Although the money was poor, the more experienced guys told me that there were some very good extra benefits. "You'll see," that laughed and nodded their heads.

The company provided the very best Santa outfits. When I was dressed, you'd have thought I was the man himself. I'd never noticed but my Santa coat had big pockets. I didn't think anything of it.

My boss told me in no uncertain terms, whatever the parents wanted, let them: pictures, more pictures, kids sitting on Santa's lap, kids kissing and hugging Santa, whatever. They'll be a line; don't rush the kids or their parents, I was told.
