She hadn't noticed it before, but the house was creepy after dark. The chipped paint, peeling floorboards, and dusty furniture, which looked like unfinished work during the day, looked particularly menacing after the sun went down. There were strange sounds, too...whenever the wind blew outside, soft, whispered moans would ripple through the house. They sounded like somebody in ecstasy, or pain, or both. The lights would flicker without warning or explanation, and the creaking sounds made Raquel think the house might be trying to crawl somewhere evil while she was still in it.

She knew she was being silly, and she did her best to ignore her overactive imagination. Unfortunately, the TV, her best hope, wouldn't work, either. All Raquel could get was an occasional snatch of dialog, but never a picture. After fiddling with it for a half hour, trying things with tin foil and wire hangers, she finally gave up and tried to read a little for her history class.

It took her about twenty minutes to focus herself on the words on the page and drown out the odd noises around her.

"Whatcha readin?" A soft, husky voice asked her.
