Over dinner, Heather watched Carol’s face, animated, hands waving as she spoke; and Heather thought back how long they had been friends. Ten years now.

They had met while working together, shortly after getting married. Both new to the job, they had bonded quickly, sharing the travails of difficult managers, little money, and newlywed problems. Carol had always been pretty, with jet-black hair, chiselled features and green eyes; and she dressed to attract attention, usually wearing a short skirt and a low open neckline of some kind. Michael, Heather’s husband, sat on Carol’s left, and as always he was entranced by Carol’s presence. Heather loved and trusted Michael, but she had always been aware that he found Carol attractive; and what man wouldn’t? Tonight she was wearing an elasticised black skirt, thigh-high, with a semi-transparent white button-up blouse. Her pink brassiere was clearly discernible through the diaphanous material – hardly subtle, but certainly eye catching: Michael had clearly been sneaking glances all night.
