Four months ago my boss had a party at his house for everyone in our department and their spouses or significant others. My wife hates to go to Michael's parties. She says it is because the men all disappear to watch ball games or talk about work and the women have very little of interest to talk about. The only reason she would go to these parties with me was because I told her it would look bad for me if she wasn't with me. So the evening started out with Alice in a bad mood. On top of that, as we were getting ready to leave for the party I discovered that my car had a flat tire so we had to take Alice's mini-van that I hate to drive.

It had been raining all day and was still raining as we drove to Michael's house. Alice didn't say a word during the twenty minute ride. She wasn't really mad at me, she was just not happy about going to the party. Alice finally broke her silence just as I was about to open the door to get out of the van. She said, "Don't disappear with all the guys like you usually do at these things. You know I don't like being left alone with all those boring women."

There were about fifty people at the party so it was rather crowded in the kitchen as people were getting drinks. For the first hour Alice didn't let go of my arm as we walked around and talked to several of my coworkers. Around nine o'clock Alice let go of my arm and had started ...
