A shower of ice sprayed out as I wrenched my skates in the opposite direction. I had been speeding across the blue line when I'd glanced over at a movement in the corner of my eye. The puck rocketed up-ice, then suddenly reversed as Scott Kimberly's stick ensnared it. In a flash, I turned back for the net with an almost feral excitement roaring up. This game was history, and I'd damned sure be the one to put it away.

Scott raced down the ice on the left and me on the right, still a little behind. Only one very nervous-looking defenseman still stood in the way, trying to figure out who to cover. I grinned. I could almost hear John Sullivan, the longtime "Voice of Thomas Jefferson hockey," making the call as the end neared; three years of listening to his broadcasts allowed me to know what his exact words would be. John's excited baritone swelled into my head.

"Kimberly on the left, looking to shoot!" Yesss!!! Scott was good, but not that good. I knew now I'd get the rebound and the game winning goal, sure as hell.

"SLAP shot! Oooh, BIG save by Allen!" Scotty raised his stick and swung down. The defenseman finally came at me, hoping to cut off a possible rebound. SMACK!! The puck screamed through the air, struck the goalie's kicking foot, and bounced back.
