THE LAW OFFICE - PART FOUR

I looked at the clock on the wall of the reception area. It was almost 12.30 p.m., thank God! That meant lunch time in the Werribee office of Emmerson & Lake. Any moment Janet would come in and announce the fact of lunch time and we would either go to the pub or to her place for lunch.

I must admit to being very fond of Janet. Three or four months after I started at Emmerson & Lake Janet did and it was really my doing. She had worked for another lawyer at my previous firm before I left and I was always impressed by her thoroughness and sense of professional responsibility.

When I heard she was looking around I thought she would be just the ticket for Emmerson & Lake. The Werribee office needed someone responsible who could run the office in the absence of the lawyers. I certainly could use her common law skills to assist me.

I suggested it to the partners who basically took her on my say so which was very flattering. I did not really know her very well at the old firm but I got to know her very well at Emmerson & Lake and we quickly became best of "mates".
