WINSTON BATES stood behind the counter and rang up the customer's items. It was hot inside the old gas station but Winston did not remove the trench coat he wore. "12.98." He told the woman the price for the gas and the newspaper. She grunted at him with her dark flickering eyes, but said nothing. She paid cash and left the store.
