Carolina's husband had a difficult time when he turned forty, it seemed to hit him all of a sudden that he was old. He joined a gym, lost the spread, bought a Hog and had himself a fling with the lady next door. He should have gotten a vasectomy too, his indiscretion resulted in the lady becoming pregnant.

Carolina wasn't impressed. She'd watched the changes with the sinking feeling that the lifestyle which she'd become accustomed to was about to come to an end. It wouldn't have been so bad she supposed, if he'd had the intelligence to stray further afield, but with the blossoming neighbour reminding her daily of the inevitability of the situation, she announced at dinner one evening that she was taking their own child, the dog and half of everything they owned to move back to the Maritimes. She'd watched his face closely, hoping to catch a fleeting look of regret there, she was disappointed once again for it was relief she saw and it wasn't fleeting at all.

So with her earthly possessions, thirteen year old son and ten year old arthritic dog, she loaded up the family van and headed back East. Her folks would put her up until she could get herself a job and a place of her own. At least there were some people one could still count on. ...
