The bunkroom was half empty the night before they sent us up. I was still wide awake. It must have been after midnight. I could tell from Ben's breathing that he was awake too. I rolled toward him, and he opened his eyes.

"Excited?" he whispered.

"Of course." I had only been off-planet once before, and that was a quick sightseeing tour when I was a kid. Now I would be going to another world, through the wormhole! As a crewman! This was way more exciting than I'd had any right to expect my life to be.

"So am I," Ben said. "In case you can't tell." He pulled his sheet and blanket aside. Now I saw what kind of excitement he meant. He stuck his hand into his shorts, obviously not able to wait until he got on the ship.

Knowing how much noise he can make when he's jerking off, I reached over and put my hand over his. Outside his shorts, of course! "What if the other guys aren't all asleep?"

"We're all going to be living in close quarters for a year," he pointed out. "We'd better get used to having zero privacy."
