Some people would call Rita Wells the biggest bitch on the planet. It's one thing when a woman is aggressive in the corporate world, but when she's a lawyer to boot, she really has an albatross around her neck. Rita was a high priced defense attorney and damn good one. She carried the burden that many defense lawyers do. She would take on any case, no matter how horrid the crime or how guilty her client appeared. As the chief prosecutor, I had taken her on many times in court. Sometimes I came out ahead, other times Rita was the victor. I wavered between admiring her, hating her, and always to my surprise, lusting after her.

Rita has a cool, almost haughty exterior, but the face and body of an angel. I suppose that contributed to the lust factor I felt. That and when she fiercely went after what she wanted, she aroused the hell out of me. There was one more than one occasion in court when I raised an objection without being able to stand up. This prevented the court from seeing what else was rising. In the next moment after having those feelings, Rita would make them go away with what she was spewing in court. The loathsome feelings would then return.

We were working on a particularly arduous case in the spring of '98. A man shot his wife to death after believing she had been having an affair with a co-worker. After failing to get the case thrown out on a technicality, Rita was now going the temporary insanity route. The state was going for the death penalty. The case was nearing its end ...
