With all their shopping done and assured that they had everything they needed, Sophie and Kyle headed south in their rental Z3 along the rocky Pacific coast on Hwy. 1 towards Carmel. At Montara, they stopped at a local grocery store and purchased a bottle of wine, two wine glasses, a variety pack of cheese bits, freshly baked French bread, chocolate syrup, and a can of whipped cream for a mid-afternoon snack.

They made another stop a short time later at a roadside fruit stand and bought some red grapes, peaches, and large red juicy strawberries picked early that morning. Ocean breeze whipped through their hair as they drove down the winding road adjacent to Half Moon Bay. Kyle noticed a gravel road ahead on the right that appeared to lead to the bay and to a stretch of a beach. He slowed the Z3 and made a sharp right.

The road was a little bumpy and patches of weeds covered the road, indicating that the locals probably not often used this road. The road took them through some trees and bushes into a small clearing with a well-worn picnic table with benches surrounded and shaded by native trees.

They were still several hundred feet from the beach, which one had to reach via a narrow winding dirt path that lead steeply down from the picnic area. Several hundred yards to the left, they could see a scattering of people involved in various activities on the sandy beach. ...
