Sam's Story

Samantha (Sam to her friends) was 28 years old and life had not been easy. She was married at eighteen to her high school sweetheart. He was the consummate athlete...quarterback of the football team, point guard on the basketball team and was drafted into professional baseball immediately after he graduated high school. Sam was the most popular girl in school and she just knew that their life together was going to be perfect.

But it had been anything but perfect. The transition from high school star athlete to minor leaguer trying to make the big leagues was not one her husband was well prepared for. He was immature, self-centered and accustomed to being pampered. The road to the majors was full of setbacks, especially injuries and long rehabs. He took his frustrations out on Sam. She endured tremendous verbal abuse and on at least two different occasions he had become physically abusive after too much to drink. She blamed herself for the incidents and remained a good and loyal wife who stuck beside him and supported him through all the tough times. She was always able to find a decent job, but had to change often, as they moved frequently.
