The transport captain led his charges into Central Processing where they slumped down into their seats, dejected and exhausted. He handed his data-file over to the Centauri clerk, who took it with its seven-fingered green hand.

"They're all yours." The captain said. The clerk hardly nodded, its attention on the wall-screen, which was playing a newsfeed with a human anchor and alien sub-titles.

"Today Centauri Station received a shipload of refugees from the galactic rim colony, Illyria. Now a Terran Authority protectorate, Illyria was once a farming community, but after an unexpected pirate raid, most of the human colonists were killed. Only children were saved, thanks to the presence of a transport ship dropping off a new load of colonists just before the planet was attacked. Brave parents sent their children away while fighting the insidious threat..."

"Turn that off." The captain snarled at the clerk. "It may be talking about something that happened fifty years ago, but for these children it happened only yesterday. They just woke up from cold-sleep."

The clerk obliged, and the captain left. The Centaurian was startled to see one of the children staring angrily at the blank wall-screen. The human, apparently female if the Centaurian remembered its Terran gender designations correctly, had her fists clenched in anger, her knuckles ...
