I knew I was in trouble about half way into the night. I just kept digging a deeper and deeper hole for myself, even though I knew that the repercussions for my actions were probably going to be beyond anything I had ever experienced. I grinned wryly into the darkness as I stumbled through the house, a sleeping child in my arms. He plopped his sleeping bundle among the covers and toys as I gently laid mine in its own bed. I watched, still grinning as he turned and walked out of the room, leaving me to tuck in the two dreaming cherubs. I took my time tucking in the children, removing a stray sock, making a mental note to check the babysitters for the other sock, picking up toys and putting them away and straightening the covers before my mind drifted to the events of the night.

I had been bugging him for weeks that I wanted to go out, just the two of us. Going out is nice, but to me a romantic evening consists of more than just dinner at the McDonalds playland and catching whatever children's movie was playing at the multiplex theater. Our lives were centered on the children, and just once, I wanted to go out, not have to think about the kids, and do things like real adults are suppose to do.

He had called me at work that morning and informed me that he was planning a special evening for us. He informed me that he had already arranged for the babysitter to get the kids from daycare and that I ‘better be ready at six sharp when he got home from work'. I smiled ...
