"Where are we going?" Angie asked him again.

"You'll see," Vincent said, smiling secretively. He smiled, trying to hide his nervousness. This was it. He couldn't believe that he was minutes away from getting everything he wanted. That is if she said yes. But why wouldn't she? His mind was arguing with itself. He shoved the thought aside.

They were driving down a county highway outside of town. He watched as the cornfields and pastures with barbwire fences passed the car on either side. This was Angie's roots; he had lived in town all his life. He was trying not to get lost.

"You know Angie," he began, slowly and deliberately. He was nervous, and he knew that his nerves could let his stuttering get the best of him. The last thing he wanted was to sound like an idiot. "I've been thinking about how much my life has changed in the past year," he said. "For eighteen years I lived in the same house, in the same terrible marriage, and now everything is different. It's almost like...I'm starting my life over. And I got to thinking that the only thing I still have from my old life is my job."
