Tears streaked the beautiful face of Lady Leandrith. The last two days had been like a bad dream. She and her brother, along with a few attendants, had gone out for a ride in the woods near their castle. Her father was the Duke of Galoria, and brother to Roldaro, King of Laboria. No thought of harm was with them as they rode recklessly through the woods.

She and her brother had outpaced their attendants and were thus alone when a band of thieves surrounded them. She had watched her young brother put up a valiant struggle, but there were five of the brigands. Her brother, a boy of thirteen, had fallen from his horse with a mortal wound. She, six years older, had been taken prisoner.

She had been bound and blindfolded before the band put her on one of their horses. Now she sat in front of the leader as they headed she knew not where. She could not see, but from their talk, which was in Blorish, she gathered that they were hotly pursued. She could hardly wait until they were caught, and she could see justice done.

The group stopped by a stream while the men talked and the horses drank. Leandrith did not know much Blorish, but she understood enough to know that they planned to split up. She thought the other four meant to ride hard towards their own land while leading their pursuers away. It seemed logical as she was sharing a horse with one of them and that was slowing them down.
