Yet another scream awakened me from another dream of restless searching. It was a good thing tomorrow was Sunday, because it was clear that neither of us was going to get any sleep. It wasn't yet 2am, I noted as I padded over to Arturo's room.

I watched him toss and turn for a few minutes. I could definitely see why his old roommates had moved out. It was a miracle that someone as trusting as he was, who left his bedroom door unlocked, had survived the wrath of all my predecessors. I loved the guy, and even I was entertaining images of hitting him over the head in hopes it would keep him out for the rest of the night. I guessed that suggesting tranquilizers would be as offensive to his pride as suggesting a therapist had been. If the liquor cabinet had not been locked, I would have been tempted to pour half a bottle of whiskey down his throat. But I would never violate his trust by forcing something unwanted on him -- sedation or seduction.

Finally I sighed, unable to let him suffer any longer, and shook him awake.

"Sorry," he said despondently. "If you want to move out, I'll understand. I'll give you your money back."
