I had a dream in which I was the one operating the cement mixer. I gave the recognition signal by turning my motor on and off three times, and I felt two taps in response. Arturo must be somewhere behind me. I could feel him start to load gravel into my chute in back. I hadn't realized how Freudian this dream was when our positions had been reversed. Arturo probably hadn't either, or he would have freaked out when he'd found himself on the receiving end.

Once I was full, I drove carefully down the sketchy road. The terrain around me was as gray and monotonous as what I'd left behind. The inky shadows suggested it was mid-morning or mid-afternoon despite the starry sky. Finally I came to a place where a half-finished Gothic cathedral stood. Or was it a coral reef? Whatever it was, it looked too spindly to bear its own weight. Smaller vehicles attached themselves to my truck and started towing it into a parking place. The dream faded away.
