The fall semester at Westminster Academy had ended, and all the students were out ... doing whatever the children of privilege did for the holidays. Skiing, I speculated. Lots of skiing. Visions of our students lounging in hot tubs at the ski lodge filled my head. Meanwhile, I was stuck in the library... again. Something here simply wasn't right.

I was researching a paper on Dust Bowl Oklahoma I'd planned to present at the Society of Western Historians annual convention in March. Don't get me wrong: I enjoyed teaching here. Some of the students cared, or at least pretended to, and you can't find that everywhere. But my ambition wasn't limited to becoming a well-respected high school teacher, and if I was ever going to escape Connecticut prep schools, there needed to be a few more publications with Wes Hawthorne's name on them. So, here I was, nose buried in yet another Dust Bowl diary.

After about 2 hours of fairly repetitive journal entries (August 5: Dusty. August 6: Dusty. August 7: Dusty. <yawn>), I had to get up and stretch my legs for a bit. So, I strolled back down to my office, downed a can of Coke for the caffeine and sugar rush, worked my neck ...
