THE QUARTERBACK

Our college doesn't have an "athletic" dorm and really wants its student athletes to live in regular dorms and associate with the rest of the undergraduates. Coach did want his team members to room together, but tried to match people up so that they would be as compatible as possible. For example, none of the quarterbacks roomed with linesmen, nor would he allow them to room with other quarterbacks - probably because he thought our competitive spirit might cause friction. As a result, there weren't many other players that I was free to choose among.

There was one guy, however, who seemed to be the ideal roommate for me. He was also a freshman and had been picked by the coach to be our primary field goal kicker. Good field goal kickers, like quarterbacks, relied far more on their brains than their brawn and Tim Dawson was no exception to the rule. He was about 6'1", 190#, curly blond hair, deep brown puppy-dog eyes and a smile that would light up a room like a 1000-watt spotlight. He, too, had an almost hairless body, which was nearly, but not quite, as well developed as mine.
