Nothing about Tommy Adams seemed to fit the Star Basketball player stereotype... For starters, he was painfully shy and never bragged. He never missed a school day, he had straight A's, and he had never been in trouble.

Tommy was also one of the only white students in his High School... His mother was not only a devoted Christian, she was also a public school teacher. She was very good at her job, and she believed that the best teachers should go where they are most needed: Inner-City Public Schools... She also believed that she could use her gifted son as a model to prove that a good education can be found anywhere. And for that reason Tommy found himself in arguably the Nation's worst school system... Baltimore City Schools.

At first the transition was very difficult for Tommy. During his Freshman year he was beaten up, robbed, and teased on an almost daily basis. He wasn't a target only because he was white, there were several other factors, [1] His mother was one of the stricter teachers in the school, [2] He was seen occasionally reading the bible in the cafeteria, and [3] He was about 5'6" 115 lbs... This was not a good combination.

His sophomore year didn't start out much better, but things slowly began to improve. Tommy stopped reading the bible in the cafeteria, he started to adapt to the other students clothing, music, and language, ...
