The staring contest began the minute the bus pulled away from the school building. Only moments before Jeff had hopped up the steps, took a deep breath and gave Gloria, the bus driver, a confident look.

“Today,” he said, with a sly grin.

“Today,” she nodded, quickly looking toward the windshield.

Jeff walked to his usual seat a few rows from the front and laid back against the window. He glanced to the oversized rear-view mirror above Gloria’s seat, as he had for the past three-plus years she had driven his route, and enjoyed the perfect downward view of Gloria’s cleavage and milky-white neck in the angled mirror. One seat up or back, the view changed. But this, the fifth row, was the ideal location.

Through the first two years on the route, Jeff, who was the last stop, would wait until his friends were dropped off before he would concentrate on Gloria.
