Susan and I had fantasized about another man, another woman, another couple for months, and had finally reached the point where we both wanted somehow to realize the fantasy. The question was who would our partners be--- and how would it happen?

It was a tough question to answer. We felt strongly that a pre-arranged swap was too cold and contrived for our taste. Going outside our circle of friends was also, from what we'd read, potentially dangerous. There were not only a lot of lunatics out there; there had been ruinous cases of blackmail as well. Besides, we wanted to feel comfortable that the people with whom we were sharing our bed (or beds) were the same sort of educated, discreet and civilized people we considered ourselves to be. That, we felt (perhaps somewhat snobbishly) foreclosed looking for partners in a swingers' magazine. And a swing club was wholly out of the question: “What,” Susan asked, “if we ran into neighbors or workmates?”
