Chapter 6

The old Runyon place was a huge, two-story building dating back to the Civil War. It dominated the land it sat upon the way that the Runyon family had dominated the area for the last 100 years. A stately Georgian revival style, it was meticulously maintained because Veronica would have settled for nothing less.

All the lights on the lower floor were burning when Latimer drove his rattling old Merc coupe through the driveway gate, and a few lights were burning on the second floor. There was a police car parked where the driveway circled past the front porch.

A young uniformed policeman named Mike Donnelly opened the door to Latimer's ring. Vince had drunk him under the table at the Blue Herron more than once.

"Oh, hello, Latimer," he said. "News sure travels fast in this town."

"Just at the speed of sound," Latimer said, moving past him through the entry hail to the door of the front room. ...
