It was going to be the kind of party that Karen relished. First of all, she was giving it in honor of her friends Mattie and Leland, who had just announced their engagement. Second, it was the kind of scene where she and Hugh could bask in the spotlight as the host and hostess. They had been married four years and had been chosen one of "the city's most beautiful couples" by a local magazine. Hugh had been a state college baseball star who had taken advantage of his popularity to open one of the city's most successful dance clubs. Karen had been the college Homecoming Queen, a stunning blonde beauty who now had her own career in a local advertising agency. Finally, it was a summer barbecue, and she could dress in shorts and a brief top to make certain that every male at the party would have eyes only for her.

Karen frowned. "Okay, if you want. But he makes me nervous."

Mattie laughed. "Oh, I know, you're thinking about that time he brushed your butt in the coffee room. Don't worry, we'll all protect you. Hugh'll be there."
