Over the summer I lived on campus in order to continue working and take a few extra classes. Very few people stayed on campus over the summer and I only knew one other person. He had lived down the hall from my friend Drew during our freshman year and the two of them had been suitemates over the past year. I had never really gotten the impression that he was very fond of me, actually I thought he hated me because he only ever really acknowledged my existence if he was with Drew and then it was just a quick wave hello.

One night, after I got out of work and was sitting in my room watching TV I got an IM from John. He asked me how my summer was going and told me I was welcome to hang out with him any time I wanted since I was probably in the same situation he was in and didn't have too many other people to hang out with. I thought it was kind of weird that he was talking to me at all and only hung out with him once or twice over the summer, watching a movie and drinking a beer.

Right before everyone else was supposed to come back to school there was a big rainstorm and half the campus was flooded. One night while it was raining especially hard John asked me if I wanted to go mud sliding. I assumed from his attitude that there would be other people going too so I threw on some old clothes and met him outside. As it turned out everybody else was in bed.
