She closed the curtain behind her. The smell of old leather and incense mixed in her nose as she positioned herself in the dark on the kneeler. She folder her hands and waited, in the dark, trying to remember the litany she learned so many years ago. But it was like riding a bicycle. The words came to her as if she had recited them yesterday. Now she was simply waiting for the little window to open. Her eyes were beginning to adjust to the darkness. She could begin to make out the fine lacework of the thin iron grate that covered the shuttered window that separated penitent from absolver. She shifted her weight slightly and the old wooden joints of the kneeler creaked. She listened in musty silence, straining to hear anything that might indicate the priest was wrapping it up with the sinner in the booth on the other side.

She heard the door over the little window open.

"Go ahead, my child. In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit"

She crossed herself as she heard the priest speak the words.

"Bless me Father, for I have sinned. It's been...." She had to think about the last time she had been in a confessional. High school, at least, maybe longer. She made a quick calculation... "12 years since my last confession". ...
