During my marriage my wife and I were asked by some neighbors to chaperone for several weekends at a summer camp in the foothills. Most of the campers were in their early teens and the counselors were college students. There were about 200 campers and 40 counselors, with only 12 adult chaperones. The camp was located on a lake in wooded valley with lots of water sports, hiking and other activities. The camp lacked telephones and had electricity pretty much only in the administration and dining halls.

The boys and girls were kept separated at night by about 400 yards of woods and strictly forbidden from making contact. The camp was sponsored by a non-denominational church (to which we did not belong) but was not overtly religious. At this point I was happily married and didn't spend much time looking at the female counselors, although with twenty college women there was a little eye candy.

The adults had wooden barrack housing while the kids and counselors were in tents. The kids roasted marshmallows around campfires and looked at the stars until about 10 pm, when they were sent to their tents. Most of the kids were happy to do that after a long day outside. On the evening of the first night I took one of the paths to visit my wife intending to discuss our group plans for the following day.
