Few men would deign to give Jane a second glance. To all outward appearances she was plain and uninteresting. Her brown hair was parted just to the right of centre and fell to her shoulders in a more or less straight line with the ends curling slightly outwards under their own weight. It was clear from its lacklustre colour that she spent little time in and she never wore any make up, not even a light touch of lipstick to relieve the pallor of her complexion. Her clothes were nearly always shapeless, loose-fitting and drab in colour. They gave no indication of the contours or form of her figure whilst her skirts and dresses, cut to the mid-point between her knees and ankles, allowed virtually nothing of her legs to be seen. In short she gave the appearance of being colourless and unattractive and seemed to make no effort to belie this impression. As though that were not enough of a handicap, however, her innate shyness suggested that she was aloof and unapproachable with a personality that matched her appearance.
