THE UGLY GIRL

He met her at the diner. The same diner where he had first seen her four months ago.

"You look good." He said. And he meant it. Her hair was a little longer now, but still had the sassy cut that set off her wide mouth. Her eyes sparkled.

"I'm getting married." She said. "And it's all your fault."

He smiled. In a way he was not terribly surprised. But it did happen faster than he imagined it would. Who would have thought, four months past, that it would have happened this way?

Four months ago, he had been in Charleston for a project. Two weeks of tedious technical photography for a mining company. That's how his work was, taking him all over the country, and sometimes overseas, on short notice. Because there was no routine to his life and schedule, as soon as he landed in a new location, he sought out a couple of local places to eat, and generally ate at those same one or two places every day.

The sameness gave him a sense of place and routine, it was true, but he also enjoyed becoming a regular and getting to know people. And, he found, somehow the people he met in small local spots were far more ...
