It was a month later. I would have been happy just to have Heather in my life again, but being a dad was too wonderful for words. I wasn't moving things into her apartment, but that's because we were looking for a bigger one.

I had met most of Heather's immediate family, and they seemed to like me. I also drove Heather and Kathy to Peoria one weekend to meet my parents. They seemed a little perturbed that Heather hadn't told me about Kathy, but they welcomed her just the same. They were both happy to see their first grandchild, but the best part was bonding with my dad. I told him I hoped to be as good as he was.

Anyway, we had long since reached an understanding that if I knew in advance that I'd be subbing at her school, I'd spend the night and drive her in myself. This week was terrific: I had an assignment that ran from Monday to Wednesday, and Tuesday was Heather's birthday! By this time I knew where Kathy's babysitter lived, so we stopped there and saved her a trip as well. While Heather was making dinner, Kathy and I went outside and she "helped" me make a snowman. My friends had always thought I made the neatest snowmen when I was in school, but making one with Kathy brought a whole new meaning to it. I imagined that I knew how a great soprano must feel singing a lullaby to her newborn.
