Abby had just about everything she wanted when she retired the day after her 55th birthday. Good health, enough money from sound (and lucky) investments, no husband or kids, and a nice, well-furnished condo....and a body that looked closer to 40 than 60.

Maybe, however, she felt she had a bit too much time on her hands, and one day she decided to enroll part-time at a local community college. It'd be educational, hopefully fun, and it'd get her out in a social environment that didn't include alcoholic beverages. And who knows, she thought, maybe she'd meet some new friends, too.

Abby went on-line and looked over the various courses offered for the next semester; she also saw that there was only a week left for her to enroll. She spent hours reviewing nearly every class available until she narrowed it down to the two that appealed most. First, she selected "The Art of Nature Photography," and her second choice was "Bird watching for Beginners." Both would be held outdoors on Saturday afternoons, but first there would be indoor "preparation lectures" of some kind.

Excited about her new academic life, Abby started a journal on the first day of class and she let me, her best friend Janet, take a look at it:
