Ted was looking forward to this train trip. He had ridden nearly every train in the United States and when it was announced that there would be a new route for the Forty-Niner between Oakland and St. Louis he was one of the first to make a reservation. He couldn't wait to tell his girlfriend, Kathy about the trip.

Ted had made a reservation for Kathy as well. This would be her first time riding a train and their first trip together since they had met. He was eager to introduce her to the train riding experience. Not just the leisure way of traveling, friendly people and the spectacular scenery. But another aspect that would become apparent only when they would be alone at night in the sleeping car.

When he broke the news to Kathy she was less than thrilled. "What is there to do on a train except sit there and stare at the scenery? I'd rather fly there on an airplane than be bored to tears." Ted tried to sing the praises of the trip and listed all the advantages. He didn't immediately tell Kathy about the special advantage, though. He would wait till later to reveal that.

Kathy made the most of what she knew would be a so-so vacation. She was able to arrange to get a week off from work. Ted too, was able to swing the time off. Ted was reading all he could about the route and places where he could take pictures from the train. He also hoped that he could get some good shots of passing trains. ...
