The plot begins to thicken.

Jacob Hawker saw what was about to happen down by the slave shacks and he wasted no time, running out of the big house like some pebble launched from a sling shot.

"Quintal! Quintal! Wada you doin'?"

The grossly overweight overseer turned and gave Jacob a hard look.

"Never you mind boy! Mister Hawker ordered this here nigger to get six lashes for talkin' back."

Jacob was in front of Quintal now. The overseer was thick set with powerful shoulders and an oily looking sandy colored beard. His shaggy brows gave him the perpetual look of menace even when he smiled and he almost never smiled unless he was inflicting pain on some unfortunate creature. Quintal pushed his broad brimmed hat back a bit as if to reassure his eyes that Jacob indeed was in front of him, interrupting the business at hand.

"Jeremiah ain't done anything wrong! Why I just asked him to help out on the fence work this mornin'!" ...
