All of Savannah was there, everyone that is who was anyone. The vast Borden estate was the elegant backdrop of the long awaited harvest ball. Handle's Water Music played by highly trained musicians added the extra decorum everyone had come to expect from what was also called a Borden ball. Black servants were actually fitted out in the highest quality broad cloth livery complete with knee britches and white stockings.

Without exception, all the guests were dressed to the hilt. Each new guest was announced as they entered adding formality to this outstanding annual event.

Elaine was dressed to kill. Her gown left her shoulders and upper chest almost totally bare while covering the rest of her in shimmering yellow brilliance. She could be seen from every vantage point in the ball room and when she was announced and her glowing presence wafted beyond the dignified presence of the doorman, the whispers increased to a drone of sound as remarks of admiration passed from man to man and indignant mumbles went from woman to woman.
