Withdraw

Vincent's world was totally separate from the one that Estrella knew. She was sheltered from the stormy world of politics and court. These things obviously weighed on him as was evident by the dark eyes... the brooding countenance and the lips that rarely knew the joy of a smile.

The marriage to his wife Beth was a political arrangement; the joining of two noble houses by the machinations of their grandparents now long in their graves. Despite the lack of choice, Vincent had never complained about it to anyone, perhaps because he and Beth rarely shared a bed. They were politics... they were the living embodiment of noble collusion... they were not friends.

Yet even as true as that was, Vincent felt her loss deeply. The woman was failed potential; the chance he didn't take... the end of an era and the shattered dream of their ancestors. She hadn't borne his child but deep down he wondered if his indifference had been to blame. An ounce of real love would have changed much between them... it simply never could develop.
