Your anger grows in time with the sound of your feet rhythmically hitting the belt of the treadmill. Your breath becomes more laboured as you increase the speed of the machine until you are running hard in an attempt to dispel the resentment that resides deep within you. You welcome the rivulets of sweat that begin to run down your anger-tense body, seeing it as physical proof that you are working out your emotions.

You look around the crowded gym as if needing further confirmation of Steve's absence and marvel once again at the speed with which the argument had taken place. Thirty minutes earlier had seen you both pedalling energetically to the gym with the purpose of spending ninety minutes or so working out together. A minor disagreement over a work issue had suddenly blown out of all proportion and once reaching the gym, you'd watched Steve storm off to the pool instead. Now, instead of exercising together, you were both working out personal demons in isolation.

You dial the treadmill back a little and as the pace slows slightly, you catch the eye of a young man working on one of the weight machines opposite. Despite a feint flush spreading across his cheeks at having been caught looking at you, he nods quickly and you supply a quick smile before deliberately looking away.
