CHAPTER ONE

It was a warm sunny day and I was just having a stroll through the local park. It was mid-afternoon and there were very few people about and I was enjoying the peace and quiet until, that was, I heard what I thought was a startled yell or scream from up ahead.

There were wooden benches alongside the path I was walking along and I noticed a woman sitting on one and a man running away from where she was sitting. She must have been in her early thirties I suppose, and as I got nearer I realised that she was crying. I paused as I approached her but she didn't look up and continued sobbing silently into a handkerchief.

I looked around but the man was no longer in sight and I stopped not knowing whether I should do or say something to her. At that moment she looked up at me with a startled expression on her face and quickly wiped her eyes.

"Are you alright?" I blurted out.

"I'm .. I'm OK" she said but it was obvious that she wasn't alright and I stood there wondering whether I should say more. Eventually I sat down beside her and we sat for a long time not saying anything. At last I could not stand the tension any more and I made to get up but ...
