Last year my then-boyfriend Bill proposed to me. When I eventually said no, he broke up with me. For the next few months, I wondered whether I'd done the right thing. Bill was a really nice guy and terrific in bed. Still, we had very different lifestyles, and I didn't think we could make it work in the long run.

Six months later, I had just come home from work when my phone rang. I was standing right by the phone, but not the one with the Caller ID box. Without thinking, I went ahead and answered it. "Joyce? It's Bill." My heart leaped. "I'm feeling kind of passionate, and I was wondering if you'd like to get together again for a night."

My heart sank again, but then I thought for a second and maybe it wasn't so bad. I hoped I could avoid letting him know how I missed him. "That depends," I said. "What did you have in mind?"

"Well, I think you made the right decision not to marry me. But the lovemaking was fantastic. I was hoping we could do it again."

I thought for a second. "I'll meet you halfway. We can have sex, but I can't promise it'll be lovemaking. Do you remember where I live?" ...
