I woke up at 8:30 to the sound of the phone in the kitchen ringing. Panicking, I leapt out of bed, ran naked down the hall and grabbed it as quickly as I could.

"Hello?" trying to sound as if I hadn't just woken up. Jesus it was freezing.

"Hello John, its Barbara"

"Ah, I thought it might be you. Did you have a good night?"

"Yes fine, how about you?"

"Oh, so-so" I said airily, thinking ‘If only you knew the truth'. "I woke up at about 3 and it was still raining" I looked out the kitchen window. The rain had stopped but the sky was covered in ominous-looking dark grey cloud. I yawned quietly.

"We're just finishing breakfast and then we'll go and see how high the river is" said Barbara.

"Ok, we might try and get down to the other one and see how it is too"

"Alright. If you haven't seen us by lunchtime it probably means we're still stuck over here" ...
