The pilots opened the throttles and the engines began their airy roar to full power, accelerating the jet down the runway, flinging us into the darkness. The last couple of days had been surreal. Graham and Barbara returned in their mud-covered 4x4 late in the afternoon and Amy and I were suddenly forced to keep physical distance between us. We had made love one last time the morning they arrived home and, if anything, it was even more tender than the night before in front of the fire. She and Graham had stood in front of the garage and waved us off as Barbara and I left for the drive to the airport. I had a funny constriction in my throat and I was silent for most of the journey.

I was flying cattle-class in 20C, on the aisle right down the back with an empty seat between me and the guy at the window who had his nose buried in a thick soft-cover. I yawned, tipped my seat back into the position that the airline laughably called ‘Reclined', arranged my jacket over my knees and shut my eyes. ‘Might as well try and have a bit of a snooze' I thought.

"Excuse me"

I opened one eye and looked across the aisle. The woman in 20D was proffering a folded slip of paper at me.

"Excuse me sir, you dropped this"
