Part Two: Nightmares and Coffee.

The day was bright, almost too bright in Darren Sharpe's opinion. To his tired eyes every color stood out almost preternaturally sharp and clear. Audioslave's ‘Cochise' was coming from the hip café's speakers, it wasn't blaring and Darren usually liked Audioslave but today the notes were harsh to his ears and it felt as if the drummer was hitting his driving beat directly onto his brain.

The sky was color of faded denim there were a few scattered clouds about and dark thunderheads way off to the north but for the moment the sun was high in the sky, nearly directly over head. A beautiful day, bright and warm, however, Darren was cold; he knew that it had nothing to do with the weather. It was the nightmares. For the first time in as long as Darren could remember he'd had the nightmare two nights in a row. They were getting worse. Almost immediately after falling asleep around four thirty in the morning, the dreams had begun plaguing Darren's sleep, bringing him awake, sweaty and shaking, on more than one occasion. As a result Darren felt washed out and ill-rested, his eyes were bloodshot and grainy and Darren thought he could hear his eyeballs grating against their sockets each time he looked around. Even the cappuccino wasn't much help and this was the second one Darren had had since arriving at the café ten minutes ago. ...
