Chapter 7

Jonathan Hastings was not a happy man as he brooded about his confrontation with Edward Spencer and the all too hasty marriage of his daughter to the mysterious law instructor. Being a highly respected citizen of the town and a staunch leader in the church he soon was able to obtain general information from the president of Harvard in regards to Mister Spencer's credentials and background. It seemed that he'd gotten his credentials in London and had worked for a prestigious law firm in New York City. Other than that the venerable president couldn't tell him much more.

So in July with his ankle barely healed he road his horse for four days, stopping at various inns on the post road, until he reached the sprawling city of New York. It took him a day to get settled in a local hotel and find the law firm that his new son in law had worked for. So, on a very hot, bright sunny Wednesday morning he was ushered in to see Mister Roger Rosenvelt a junior partner with the firm. He was a stout man of middle age perhaps forty. His wig was impeccable and he wore a dark brown suit of the most expensive broad cloth.

After the proper civilities had been exchanged Hastings asked, "So mister Rosenvelt what can you tell me about Edward Spencer?" Rosenvelt ...
