Chapter One

Tommy Mason and grew up together in western Kentucky during the fifties and sixties. It was hard on us being friends for several reasons. Though we lived right next door to each other, I was Catholic, and he was a Southern Baptist. He was black and I was white, though neither of us noticed. The little town we lived in was still pretty predjudiced toward blacks and I got into several fights because some of my other friends called him nigger.

My school was run by an order of Nuns called the Sisters of Charity and we were a pretty small school. Tommy went to Central high and was taught his readin', writin' and rithmetic by a conglomeration of teachers that didn't like black kids much and showed it by the grades they gave the black kids. I didn't know about that until years later and even then it really pissed me off. Tommy was a bright kid and I thought had a heart of gold. During our teenaged years our friend-ship was something that people should have been proud of. Little did I know that we would become mortal enemins and would remain that way for the rest of our lives.
